Grassroot Donors

When starting in 2018 we started with an empty slate. No tools, no budget, no membership, no grants. Our organization was established and funded for the first year strictly on donations from individuals and businesses. We would not be where we are today with the help of these people.

Below you will find bios of the five local businesses who donated us the funds required to get our organization started. We would not be here today if it were not for these five local businesses.

To all of our businesses who donated and all of the individuals who stepped up to help make this happen – thank you.

Janine Johnson - Foundation Chriopractic

Hi! My name is Janine Johnson and I am so lucky that my husband Kurtis talked me into/bullied me into trying mountain biking in Fernie, BC 10 years ago! There was a lot of terrified crying, huffing and puffing, and yes, even some cursing, especially the first year. However, I quickly began to realize how fun, exhilarating, challenging and rewarding mountain biking actually is and I am now hooked. I love how much I have improved over the years and that I look forward to biking for many more years to come. So many times, I just stop and appreciate how amazing it is to be out and active in nature, whether that is in the mountains of Fernie, or on the gorgeous riverbanks of Saskatoon.

I have been a chiropractor for 18 years and am a co-owner of Foundation Chiropractic in the Saskatoon Stonebridge area. I see all ages of patients from infants to 100 year olds and everything in between. We all have spines and nervous systems that need care and maintenance! I love my profession and can’t imagine being anything other than a chiropractor!

I am very excited to be a volunteer and financial donor for the SMBTA. I have been enjoying the trails in Saskatoon over 20 years for biking, trail running and hikes with my dog Aksel and husband Kurtis. So many people don’t realize how amazing our riverbank is, and it is my hope that with the help of SMBTA we can create a sustainable and well maintained trail system for everyone to enjoy. I look forward to seeing what we can do in our amazing city.

Kurtis Klutz - Flaman Physiotherapy

Hi! My name is Kurtis Klutz and I am a member of the SMBTA as well as a donor. I am originally from Canora, SK where I began mountain biking in the late 80’s in Duck Mountain Provincial Park. Since then, I have been an avid rider, biking all over Alberta and BC with the last decade mainly spent in Fernie, BC. I have seen first hand what the Fernie Trail Alliance and Mountain Bike Club have been able to do in my second home of Fernie. I believe that Saskatoon has immense potential for an extensive trail network catering to riders of all abilities through an inclusive group like the SMBTA. I think that this group has been needed for a long time now to create and maintain a sustainable trail system not only for mountain bikers, but also trail runners, hikers, snowshoers, etc.

I have been a physiotherapist for the last 22 years and have lived and worked in Saskatoon for the past 17. I am currently an employee at Flaman Physiotherapy where I see a wide variety of sports and orthopaedic injuries.

You will find me on the trails in Saskatoon with my wife Janine and my black lab Aksel. We live a block from the river and wouldn’t move any further away from it. We enjoy biking and trail running in all seasons and make the most of our riverbank environment. I am happy to not only volunteer my time to the SMBTA, but also choose to provide financial resources as well. I am excited to see what we can do in our great city!

The Bike Doctor

The Bike Doctor has been around since 1986 and has been committed to growing the local cycling community ever since! In fact many of the trails in town were built by our staff! We have always focused on bikes and only bikes in order to make sure we are providing the best and most up to date knowledge on all things bike!

We are excited to support the Saskatoon Mountain Bike Alliance to make sure the trails are here for a long time to come. We are so lucky to have trails with easy access and it is great to see a group willing to put in the time to make sure we can adventure so close to home! We believe that Saskatoon can allow for progression of all kinds of riders to develop their skills and enjoy the outdoors with their friends and family without a big trek out of town. We will continue to support the development of great trails in our hometown so that we can keep seeing your smiling faces out on the trail!

Doug's Spoke N Sport

Doug’s Spoke N Sport has been supporting the cycling community since 1987. We have been users of the local trails for a long time. From the legendary Kona cup race on the Sutherland beach trails (AKA Kona cup trails) with over 250 entrants, to riding clinics and other events. We are very fortunate to have such amazing trails in the heart of the city.

To have the SMTBA now in place to maintain the trails and keep them safe for all ages and skill levels to use is amazing. We are very excited to have this group to be the voice of cyclists for years to come.

In Saskatoon, we don’t have the mountains, but we have them in our hearts; we use what we have and use it well. It’s comforting to know the SMTBA is there to keep things rolling. They will have Doug’s Spoke N Sport’s support for years to come!

Roll on SMTBA… Roll on!!!

Outtabounds

Outtabounds may be more known for its roots in the Ski and Snowboard industry, however Outtabounds (formerly Ski and Bike) has been a staple in the cycling community in Saskatoon for 30+ years.

Although the name changed in the early 2000’s Outtabounds philosophy has remained the same, quality product, and a customer experience to keep people coming back.

From hosting Mountain bike races in the 80’s out at Blackstrap, to more current events like our weekly Hi-5 rides, Girls on Bikes YXE, and the first ever International MTB Day event two years ago, the focus continues to be the community!

We are thrilled to see the Trail Alliance morphing into a staple group for years to come, and we can’t wait to get out with the community for trail days, and rides in the future!
